The poem is much longer than the verses selected by Kirmiz. It is included in Nijim’s entire collection of poetry, a book published in 2005 by Dar Merit, Cairo, Egypt, on p. 602. It’s noted that the poem was written when Nijim was serving time at the notorious Abū Zaʿbal prison in Egypt in 1977. On November 27, 1977, the poem appeared in al-Safir Newspaper in Lebanon on page 14. However, the newspaper version was slightly different than the one that appeared in his book. It also appears elsewhere on various online platforms with somewhat different verses or entirely new verses and/or sections. Since Nijim was known to recite his poems from memory and often recited slightly different versions of his poems, he may likely have altered or modified specific words or brought in or out certain verses or sections, leading to having many other transcriptions of the poem floating on the Internet.
